Brown-Skinned Boy

A poem by Dianicia Trott

My little brown-skinned boy

Can I really protect your joy?

This world will kill your smile

Make you feel like nothing is worthwhile

My precious brown-skinned babe

Must I watch your sparkle fade?

But you are destined to cry

To lose some of the light in your eyes

My little brown-skinned boy

Mama cannot give you joy

But I can show you how to pray

Lead you to the Light that never fades

When hell breaks loose and breaks you down

I will show you where joy is found

Help you see what is worthwhile

And keep investing in your smile.

I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

This poem is both a lament and encouragement. Inspiration came from the mass shooting events the weekend of May 14, 2022. As a mother, I processed what it feels like to raise a young boy in the current cultural climate. It’s honestly heartbreaking. But I also remember that this world is not my home and it is not the ultimate source of my peace, joy, hope or my security. I’m praying daily for the grace to usher my child into the presence of Christ. I will pray the same for all of you who are raising children. May He transfer our babies into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Take heart. He has overcome and He will come soon.

  1. Dear Dianicia, I am so glad to have contact with you. I love this poem — I have written a few, but most are books. I look forward to getting to know you past the written page. Love and blessings for all our Father has called you to do. Fran
